The project's focus is on basic and advanced training. In addition, funding of individual projects is possible. The programme aims at strengthening ties among associations, museums and volunteers and improving collaboration with official heritage conservation efforts. Official and voluntary heritage conservation efforts have the common goal to facilitate the preservation, documentation and research of our past. The project is carried out in close co-operation among the Bayerisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege (Bavarian Office for the Conservation of Historical Monuments), The Gesellschaft für Archäologie in Bayern e.V. (Bavarian Archaeological Association), the Bayerischer Landesverein für Heimatpflege e.V. (Bavarian Association for the Preservation of Local Traditions) and the Ministry of Science and the Arts.

Cultural Heritage Preservation Academy for Children

In keeping with the slogan "Think about your heritage building ... Preserve it or let it decay?", the Children’s Cultural Heritage Preservation Academy at Schloss Obernzenn (Middle Franconia) introduces third- to ninth-graders to heritage preservation. After being given a tour through the "Blaues Schloss" (Blue Castle), and being introduced to heritage preservation, the children carry out practical chores at a workshop: In a way, they act as "margravial court artists" and use the structure of stucco marble as a model to create marbled papers, form stucco strips and work with gold leaf. In addition to these activities, the Children's Academy offers many other courses and guided tours. The academy is headed by art historian Edith von Weitzel-Muldersbach M.A., who is also member of the Landesdenkmalrat (Bavarian State Monument Council).

Third-Graders and Heritage Buildings

This project is carried out in close co-operation among the Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Bildung (Bavarian State Ministry of Education), the Bayerisches Staatsinstitut für Schulqualität (State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research, ISB) and the architect Wolfgang Weise, representative of the Bund für deutsche Architekten (Association of German Architects, BDA) in the National Committee on Cultural Heritage Preservation. It aims at fostering discussion among people working in heritage preservation, teachers and their pupils regarding heritage buildings, heritage building conservation and cultural heritage preservation. The students are introduced to a heritage building in their school's vicinity. In addition, they obtain information about cultural heritage preservation in general and heritage buildings in their neighbourhood in particular. A person occupied with practical heritage building conservation describes his or her profession. The teachers then discuss with their pupils, which practical contribution they could make to preserve a heritage building. If possible, the projects are presented to the public at each school on April 18 of each year, the International Open Monument Day.

The publication "Erlebnis Denkmal" (Adventure Heritage Building, in German) contains a selection of heritage building conservation projects carried out at Bavarian schools. This publication may be ordered through the Staatsinstitut für Schulqualität und Bildungsforschung (State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research) in Munich, or at any bookstore.

Jugendbauhütte Regensburg

The Jugendbauhütte Regensburg (Masons' Lodge for Young People Regensburg), initiated by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Heritage Conservation) and funded by Internationale Jugendgemeinschaftsdienste (International Youth Community Services), offers young people from across Europe up to the age of 26 the opportunity to spend a voluntary year working with companies and institutions that are active in the field of heritage conservation. In doing so, these young people learn about their own abilities and professional affinities.

The participants obtain a direct overview of the wide range of topics in the field of cultural heritage preservation. They do practical work in different businesses and institutions, including crafts enterprises, heritage conservation offices, museums and other organisations dealing with monuments, or work with conservators or architects. The volunteers are mostly sent to locations within and around the city of Regensburg. During their voluntary year, participants familiarise themselves with inter-cultural learning, voluntary work, social skills, self-organisation, emancipation and ecology.

In addition, by attending seminars during seven weeks throughout the year, they learn about the basics of monument preservation. These seminars deal with the history of monument protection and preservation, the significance of the European cultural heritage, stylistics, material science as well as research and work methods. Legal principles and relevant job profiles are topics of the seminar series, too.

Listed Pubs and Inns in Bavaria

In Bavaria, there are numerous listed pubs, inns and hotels. We would like to introduce a small selection of these buildings to you.

Aviso Einkehr (Aviso Stop for a Bite)

Since 2008, in each edition of the aviso (in German) our aviso authors present one of the listed pubs and inns. All of these most beautiful culinary-Bavarian muse temples are respectable and authentic evidence of our rich and architectural culture. Furthermore, all of these establishments offer excellent food and some even accommodation.

History with a Taste

The restaurant guide "Genuss mit Geschichte" (History with a Taste) highlights 50 listed Bavarian pubs and is jointly published by the Bavarian Office for the Conservation of Historical Monuments, the Bavarian Association for the Cultivation of Local Traditions, the Bavarian Hotel and Restaurant Association as well as the Bavarian State Ministries of Education, Science and the Arts and of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology. The book shows a new and to date almost unknown facet of Bavarian gastronomy, namely the historic bar parlours preserved in their original state. It exclusively includes inns listed in the Bavarian Directory of Heritage Buildings, which had originally been built as such. The main criterion for being selected was their original interior: The rooms of each of the presented inns feature a degree of preservation and unique authenticity that clearly show the building's historic condition. The interior of all of the selected inns is of particular value and charm.

Owners and Supporters of Heritage Buildings - Associations and Networks

In Bavaria, there are numerous groups and associations of dedicated owners and supporters of heritage buildings. At this point, we would like to mention the associations of private owners of heritage buildings, which are represented in the Landesdenkmalrat (State Monument Council of Bavaria), and the Denkmalnetz Bayern (Bavarian Network of Heritage Building Conservation Activists), which includes many interest groups.
